The social media giant Twitter has marked its first anniversary since opening its London offices by giving an update on the number of active users and says there are now more than 10 million in the UK, placing Britain as the fourth biggest user of Twitter globally after the US, Japan and Brazil.

According to @gordonmacmillan at Wall Blog:
"Of the 10 million UK active users 80% of those are also active on mobile devices. The figure is significantly higher than the global average, which sits at 55%. The high number of active UK users on mobile is a clear reflection not only of the widespread use of smartphones in the UK, but also of our growing “always on” attachment to Twitter where users will tweet from their phones while on the move or from the couch whilst watching TV."

Twitter are also trumpeting their success as advertisers, with several major brands using Twitter as part of their marketing strategy, with over 140 UK brands such as Asda, Cadbury, Sky , O2, Ladbrokes, LoveFilm, Capital One, Electronic Arts, Sky, Sony, Vodafone and Channel 4 having advertised with Twitter since it launched its Promoted Products in September 2011

"According to Tony Wang, who heads up Twitter in London, UK brands are ‘leading the charge’ in the way they use Twitter’s ad products.
‘They are setting a lot of standards which are being benchmarked internally,’ he said, referring to campaigns by brands such as O2, Starbucks and Cadbury"
Twitter's growing popularity is a new, exciting and innovative outlet for brands to advertise on. With so many users in the UK and abroad, the future for Twitter's London office will be presumably new marketing campaigns as more and more brands view social media as a legitimate method of permeating the market.
