According to The Drum and various outlets, California search and tech giant Google has appointed agency 72andSunny to create a new ad campaign for their Google Chrome web browser.
Incumbent agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty, who handled the account for the last four years, said in a statement:

“Our involvement with this project is coming to an end as Google has decided for operational reasons to embark on the next stage of the Chrome journey with an agency on their doorstep in California.”

Named 2013's Agency of the Year by Ad Age, 72andSunny are famous for taking a tough brief from Samsung and consequently catapulting the brand into the world's second most popular, as well as taking a huge slice of market share from rivals Apple. Their "iSheep" commercial for Samsung Mobile ranked No. 1 in a list of 2012's top-10 viral adverts, amassing 71 million views.

"There comes a point with agencies where [marketers] recognise what it is you do best and want to work with you for that reason," said 72andSunny chief executive John Boiler. "For us, that's people who need to make a bold move in the marketplace -- like take on the biggest mobile phone company in the world, or be the smallest burger chain with the highest results."

This appointment suggests that Google want to move their product away from the consumer-focused "Chrome Stories" that pulled at the heartstrings and appealed to an entrepreneurial and family-centric demographic. With Google (alongside Samsung) locked in a fierce battle with Apple, Sergey Brin and Larry page have obviously deemed 72andSunny the agency that can truly rattle Apple's marketers.
