The battle of the search giants is at last heating up, with Yahoo! surpassing Google's traffic in the month of July for the first time since May 2011.

The first year of Marissa Mayer's premiership has yielded mixed results, but Yahoo!'s strong July saw it ranked as the U.S' most popular online destination with 196.5 million visits to Google's 192.2 million.

Even more impressive is that comScore factored in YouTube's traffic to Google's total, despite million-dollar acquisitions Tumblr and Flickr not being attributed to Yahoo!.

Google's recent five-minute downtime did not affect July's statistics.

However, Google continues to dominate in search traffic, with 67% of the U.S. market share. Microsoft's Bing took 17% whilst Yahoo! posted a mere 12%.
