Mozilla have snapped up a new global director of marketing in John Bernard to help launch a new Firefox mobile platform.

Bernard has extensive marketing experience with Sony Ericsson and LG, before leaving his role at Canonical, makers of the Ubuntu Linux platform.

A statement from Bernard's former employers read:

"We can confirm that John will be leaving Canonical at the end of the week. After over three years at Canonical working on many of our marketing initiatives with OEMs, we wish John all the best in his new role at Mozilla."

According to Marketing Magazine:

Mozilla, which claims that more than 400m people worldwide use its Firefox internet browser, is looking to take on rival systems such as Google’s Android, Micrsoft’s Windows 8 and Apple’s iOS 6.
Bernard will be responsible for hiring a marketing team to build brand awareness among consumers through advertising, sponsorship, in-store activity, channel marketing, and via agreements with smartphone manufacturers.
The US open-source software company has already announced a tie-up with Chinese mobile phone manu-facturer ZTE. A ZTE handset running the Mozilla operating system is expected to be rolled out early next year.
